Dr. Robert Newcomb is a professor in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Maryland. He is a world-renowned expert in electrical engineering and has historically been an exceptional mentor for students who are now successful and are involved in cutting-edge research in biomedical engineering.

Sarah AsfariTeam LiaisonSarah is a BioEngineering and pre-med student, currently aspiring to be a dermatologist and/or focus on melanoma research. She is an active member of Engineers without Borders and the MSA, and is currently working at the FDA on developing 3D printed breast phantoms for mammography simulations. Sarah enjoys spending her free time exploring new places and catching up with friends over coffee, as well as reading up on the latest cancer studies. Sarah hopes to contribute to team CARDIO what she has acquired from years of scientific experimentation and her background in the biological sciences.

Aishwarrya JayapalWeb LiaisonAishwarrya is a Neurobiology-Physiology and Psychology double major aspiring to become a physician. Previously, she has worked at the National Institutes of Health, investigating the neural circuits involved in the reward pathway using optogenetics. Currently, she is a clinical research assistant at the Advanced Pediatric Brain Imaging Lab at Children’s National studying the neuroanatomical effects of congenital heart disease on fetal brains. She spends most of her time providing mentorship to underserved teens in the Washington D.C. metro area diagnosed with sickle cell disease. She is really excited to see how Team CARDIO’s work can contribute to the advancement of biotechnology and medical practice.

Sahith MukkuFinancial LiaisonSahith is a Neurobiology-Physiology major hoping to someday become a physician who also manages a lab. He works at the FDA conducting bioinformatics and chemical research on various toxins. He is also involved on campus as a CMNS recruitment ambassador and as a coordinator with TerpService. On the weekends, Sahith volunteers at Howard County General Hospital. As a member of team CARDIO, Sahith hopes to accomplish research which can be used to save lives.

Bareera QamarWeb LiaisonBareera is majoring in Neurobiology and Physiology and is interested in pursuing a medical career. She is part of a research group on campus where she studies the effects of delivering therapeutic drugs in cancer cells. She also volunteers at Children’s National Hospital in DC and loves to spend her time there. In addition, she also woks as a Technical Writer for UMD’s IT Department. In her free time, she loves to paint, read and listen to music. She is really excited about Team CARDIO and expect to learn from this journey.

Divyam SatyarthiTeam SecretaryDivyam is a Neurobiology and Physiology major on the pre-med track. He has done research with protein crystallization with proteins that affect inflammation. He also works with the University Health Center and has worked at local hospitals and other organizations. He is very excited to work with team CARDIO.

Cristina TousLibrary LiaisonCristina is a bioengineering major focused on biotechnology and therapeutics. She plans to go into industry for development and delivery of drugs after graduate school. She has research experience developing and optimizing procedures for various analytical methods and biomedical applications. In her free time Cristina enjoys playing intramural and pickup soccer or experimenting with new recipes at home. She is excited to be in Gemstone with such an innovative and supportive team.
